Dr. Bernard’s professional journey reflects more than three decades of service dedicated to developing people, strengthening organizations, and creating opportunities for meaningful and lasting change. His career has crossed multiple disciplines and settings—from foster care and human services to clinical practice, higher education, organizational leadership, research, and Christian ministry. While these experiences are diverse, they share a common purpose: bringing together knowledge, relationships, effective leadership, and compassionate service to help individuals and communities flourish. The following four areas represent the primary threads that have shaped his professional experience, leadership philosophy, and continuing sense of calling.
Leadership
Leadership has been a consistent thread throughout my professional life, from developing new programs and supervising clinical teams to leading university initiatives and planting and growing a church. I am particularly energized by opportunities to take an idea from vision to implementation, build the structures and teams necessary to sustain it, and help others grow in their own leadership. My approach combines strategic thinking and administration with relationship-building, communication, mentoring, and a commitment to developing people rather than simply managing processes.
Foster Care & Human Services
Dr. Bernard’s connection to foster care began long before it became part of his professional career. As the biological child of foster parents, he grew up in a family that welcomed foster children into their home, giving him an early understanding of both the importance of caring adults and the complex challenges experienced by children and families involved in the child-welfare system.
Professionally, Dr. Bernard’s experience has included developing an independent-living and transitional-housing initiative for emancipated foster youth, leadership within the Rising Tide Transitional Housing Program, Foster Family Agency administration, and direct social work and case management with foster youth and families. His broader career in clinical mental health and human services has further shaped his commitment to trauma-informed, relationship-centered care. These experiences continue to inform his interest in helping vulnerable young people move beyond simply achieving independence toward experiencing stability, meaningful relationships, purpose, and whole-person flourishing.Dr. Bernard has also experienced first-hand the depth of love and sacrifice of the foster care provider as the biological child of foster parents. This foundational experience established a core practice model for helping others who navigate through the child welfare and dependency system.
In 2021, Dr. Bernard served as the founding Director of the Clinical Training Program at Light Counseling. He specializes in Trauma-Informed Care, Play Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Additionally, he worked as a Licensed Mental Health Clinician at Blackwater Counseling, focusing on overcoming self-destructive behavior and trauma.
PURPOSE & CALLING
Dr. Bernard’s professional and personal calling centers on helping people, organizations, and communities move toward meaningful and lasting transformation. Grounded in Christian faith and informed by decades of experience in human services, education, clinical practice, and ministry, he believes effective service begins with recognizing the inherent dignity, strengths, and potential of every person. His work reflects a commitment not only to addressing immediate needs, but also to developing people, strengthening organizations, and creating environments in which individuals and communities can flourish.
LEADERSHIP & SERVICE
Dr. Bernard approaches leadership as an opportunity to equip, encourage, and develop others. His spiritual gifts of Exhortation, Administration, Teaching, and Shepherding are reflected throughout his professional life—from developing programs and organizations to mentoring students, supervising clinicians, leading ministry teams, and serving vulnerable children and families. He is particularly drawn to opportunities that require both vision and implementation: bringing people together around a meaningful purpose, creating structures that support the mission, and helping individuals and teams grow in their capacity to serve others effectively.
VISION & IMPACT
Throughout his career, Dr. Bernard has been drawn to opportunities where vision can become practical and sustainable action. His work has included developing programs, building organizations, preparing emerging professionals, strengthening leaders, and creating new approaches to serving individuals and communities. He is especially interested in initiatives that bring together research, professional practice, community partnership, and Christian service to produce meaningful and measurable outcomes.
That vision continues through his work with Transformed Industries and the developing concept for the Transformed Lives Independent Living Community, focused on helping young adults transitioning from foster care move beyond simply achieving independence toward experiencing stability, belonging, purpose, meaningful relationships, and whole-person flourishing.
